Shared Responsibility: Safety Measures for E‑Hailing Drivers

We, the concerned citizens and transport service users of South Africa, urgently call for coordinated action to address the escalating violence, targeted attacks, and fatal incidents affecting e‑hailing and private transport drivers. The rise in hijackings, armed robberies, shootings, and vehicle burnings—often carried out by criminals posing as passengers—has created a national safety crisis. These drivers provide an essential service to millions, yet they operate under life‑threatening conditions with inadequate protection and limited access to real-time support when emergencies occur.

We therefore demand immediate intervention to improve driver safety through a combination of enhanced law‑enforcement visibility in high‑risk areas, strengthened collaboration between policing agencies and e‑hailing platforms, and the enforcement of stricter passenger verification measures. In addition, we call for the development of a national strategy—jointly led by government, industry, and driver representatives—to reduce targeted violence, improve reporting mechanisms, and ensure practical support for victims, including access to emergency assistance and post‑incident recovery resources. Protecting these workers is not optional; it is a moral, social, and economic imperative.

We further urge e‑hailing and delivery companies to take proactive responsibility by upgrading their security features, improving emergency response times, and investing in meaningful safety education for drivers. Without decisive, collaborative, and sustained action from all relevant institutions, more lives will be lost. We therefore petition for immediate measures that safeguard the men and women who keep our transport systems functioning and our communities moving.
